About this event

Lee Ming-che travelled to China in 2017 and disappeared. A Chinese court later convicted him of “subversion of state power” and he served five years in prison – for statements and activities he had made in Taiwan. His case has since become a reference point for how an authoritarian state reaches beyond its borders: through surveillance, administrative pressure, prosecution and targeted disinformation.

On the morning of 11 October, four speakers take up this topic in Berlin: Lee Ming-che himself; Tashken Davlet, a Uyghur-Taiwanese human rights advocate; I-Min Hsiao, who has spent years working on judicial reform and supporting victims; and Ivan Choi, project manager at the New School for Democracy. Drawing on their own experience, they address questions such as: How has China's cross-border repression changed in recent years? What damage do overseas influence operations, disinformation and political interference do to democratic societies? What protection do those affected need? And how can Taiwan and Europe work together on this?

Organised by New School for Democracy, Taiwan Association in Sweden, Ananasli, Walking for Taiwan Association in Europe (WTAE) and Doublethink Lab, in cooperation with Junge Taiwan Initiative and Freiheit für Hongkong e.V.
