In her solo exhibition limɪn[ə]l flesh Taiwanese media artist Ya-Wen Fu explores the human body between the poles of perception, social structures and technology. Three performative installations combine body and movement using wearable structures, video, sound, mechanical systems and artificial intelligence. The technology intervenes in the performers’ movements. It pulls, delays or influences physical impulses. This gives rise to situations that lie somewhere between self-determined action and external control.
The exhibition brings together three works from different phases of Ya-Wen Fu’s artistic practice. The Body in Which I Feel at Home (2024) wraps the body in a wearable structure made of metal rings and tension springs. So Absurd! (2023) explores loss of identity, uprooting and fear. The new work The Unarrived Body (2026–2027, in development) combines dance, mechanical control, real-time video, sound and artificial intelligence.
At the subsequent book launch for SO ABSURD! Ya-Wen Fu and Peggy Schoenegge will present her publication, which offers insights into her artistic process. The publication will continue to evolve over several years by means of an AR feature that provides access to animations that will be continuously updated until 2031.
The title limɪn[ə]l flesh describes a state on the threshold – an in-between space in which the body does not appear as a fixed form, but is in a state of constant flux. In her work, the artist explores how technology and social structures influence our actions and where the boundaries between control and self-determination lie.
