Film languages: Mandarin, Malay, Thai; English subtitles.
Taiwan Film Festival Berlin (tffBerlin) Germany Tour in Munich.
Mother Bhumi (地母) | CHONG Keat-Aun | Malaysia, Hong Kong, Italy, Saudi Arabia | 2025 | 129 mins
Set in late-1990s Malaysia, Mother Bhumi follows Hong-Im, a widowed farmer and ritual healer trying to protect her family in a multi-ethnic rice-farming village. By day, she resists the seizure of local farmland; by night, she heals the sick and performs exorcisms. As colonial-era conflicts resurface, spirits return, black magic stirs, and a monk leads a buffalo. Here, the line between the living and the dead, between political power and ritual knowledge, has never been clearly drawn.
Post-screening Q&A with director CHONG Keat-Aun. Taiwanese snacks will be served.
Languages: Mandarin, Malay, Thai; English subtitles. Not rated by the German FSK, admission for adults only (18+).
